The 83/85 Dundee FC Umbro shirt, the first of the silky kind the club had and it didn’t take long for cult status. We hadn’t beat Dundee United since the 1979/80 season, a 1-0 victory with Eric Sinky Sinclair notching the winner. The 5th November 1983 will live long in the memory as the fireworks were at Tannadice with a 1-0 win with Peter Mackie scoring the famous goal. A result that helped in stopping that United team winning the League for a second year.
It wouldn’t be until the following season we would see another derby victory and what a win it was. Tannadice, 8th September and still looking for a League win. The Dees would triumph in a 4-3 thriller with the highlight being a Tosh McKinlay 30 yard volley. The shirt’s last outing would also be a League win versus the Arabs on the last game of the season on 11th May 1985. A 1-0 win with Robert Connor scoring.
Other than those games one of the best goals in the club’s history was scored in this kit, none other than Bobby Glennies’ 40 yard pile driver into Jim Leighton’s Aberdeen net at Dens Park’s TCK end. Like this shirt, unforgettable.
